Friday Morning Keynote: The Power of Representation with Emilee Gilpin
Times are tense and it isn’t difficult to feel negative, hopeless and distraught about the state of the world. Working for a semi-mainstream news outlet in Canada, Emilee Gilpin, a multimedia journalist with National Observer, has seen that difficult balance between telling the stories that matter, both holding truth to power, raising red flags about ongoing human rights violations, and offering solutions, positivity and hope.
Words matter, relationships matter, representation matters. Through relationships with Indigenous peoples, Emilee will share what she has learned about fighting against generations of mistrust in order to hear real stories, share accurate information and human-centred narratives that inspire change, and have the power to build bridges rather than walls.
She will talk about relationship-based reporting, in fleshing out the grey area between the seemingly black and white, and bringing every political, social, economic issue back to the land, the waters, to each other and ourselves.
